Pheasant Hunting Season

The General Season is December through January.

Hunting Ring-Necked Pheasant

The pheasants eyesight is great, and so is its hearing. Hunting them has to be done quietly. However, the pheasant prefers to hide, rather than run, and it will often sit tight and allow hunters to get so close they are almost stepping on them. If they feel like theyve been found, theyll either run as fast as 10 miles per hour or, take off in a loud, startling flurry, flying as fast as 45 MPH. Typically, outfitters hunt this upland game bird with dogs. Many guides will supply trained Pointers or Setters for your use, ensuring both a safe and successful hunting trip.

Hunting the colorful ring-necked Pheasant is one of the most enjoyable outdoor sports, and is the perfect setting in which to build relationships with your family, friends and clients. Our top guides and the relaxed atmosphere of hunting season will create a world-class memory that lasts a lifetime.

Physical Characteristics

The ring-necked pheasant is a colorful bird, making it easy to identity even though it is similar to the partridge. The males sport golden and brown feathers that are shot through with green, white and even purple. They have red heads that have a small crest. The neck is a bright green with a collar of white. Females are far less noticeable, as they have plain brown plumage. The young males also have this brown coloring for the first 10 weeks of their lives.

Both males and females are close to the size of a standard chicken. They reach between 20 and 36 inches long, and theyre usually between 2 and 4 pounds. The females are significantly smaller and are often not hunted at all. Pheasants differ from similar birds in that their legs are long and powerful. They also have four toes that end in sharp claws.

Origin, Native Habitat and Countries

The pheasant does prefer flat fields and grasslands, just like the partridge (aka Bobwhite Quail). The birds originated in Asia, but they have since moved all over the world, through North America and Europe. Though they are often hunted in fields, theyre also found on farms, in forests, in swamps and in scrublands.

Behavior/Social Characteristics

Pheasants will eat both animals and plants. Their standard diet consists of fruit, berries, seeds, insects, reptiles and worms. Pheasants do not migrate in the winter. Instead, they stick around and dig in the snow for food. They can live a few days without eating, if need be. Multiple birds are often found at once, as they form small flocks.
