Physical Characteristics

Both the Gray Fox and the red fox weigh around 13 pounds and is the canine family, related to wolves, dogs and jackals. Its three main characteristics is the fluffy tail, the sharp, slender muzzle and its red/orange fur, typically trimmed in white. White is usually found on the underside of the and on the throat. The feet are usually black as well as the tips of the ears. If threatened, the red fox will run, and its slender build means it is very fast. It has been clocked at 30 miles per hour.

Though they are canines, foxes are in some ways similar to cats. Their claws are retractable, and they have the same vertical pupils. These pupils help to draw in more light so that they can see at night, when they’re often active. This, along with their great hearing and sense of smell, allows them to hunt effectively and chase down prey.

Origin, Native Habitat and Countries

The red fox can be found all over the world, from North America to North Africa to Eurasia. It can live in many different habitats, such as forests and grasslands. It’s even been found in the Arctic Circle, out in the country and close to urban centers. Of all fox species, the red fox is the most widespread and the most common. It is incredibly adaptable, which is how it lives in such vastly different areas.

Ecology/Behavior/Social Characteristics

Gray fox and red foxes will eat fruits, berries and even human garbage, depending on where they live and what they can find, but they first seek out meat. Foxes have been known to take rodents, birds, reptiles and small mammals.

On the whole, the red fox and Gray fox is a solitary animal. It is occasionally found in very little packs, and the females will raise the young for a time, but it prefers to be alone. Male and female foxes only mate once a year, and this peaks in January. They’ll screech loudly to attract mates. When they have babies, they’ll dig dens underground. These give them protection, as they hide from wolves and other predators, venturing out for food.
