The great advantage of hunting horseback is the distances and country that we can cover. These hunts aren’t too physically demanding because of the horses, but you still have to be able to climb the mountain and move to where the animals are. This isn’t very difficult, but we recommend being prepared.
We hunt an area in Alaska that is remote, game rich and unpressured. Our unique approach as a true horseback outfitter allows us to access places that would be otherwise unaccessable. This combination of factors allows us to kill some of the biggest bull moose anywhere in Alaska.
If possible, we recommend riding a few times or taking a few horseback riding lessons before your hunt. The more comfortable you are on the horse, the more enjoyable the experience will be. We may easily spend over four hours a day in the saddle from base camp, or even more when we hunt from spike camps.
In addition to the outstanding moose hunting, we boast a highly successful Dall Sheep hunting experience. Our area lies deep within in the Alaska Range and we are fortunate to have access to some incredible Dall Sheep country.
We offer spring and fall Grizzly hunts on Kodiak Island and in the interior from our camp in the Alaska Range. And our caribou hunts offer the opportunity to kill an impressive trophy bull.
If you’ve been dreaming of an Alaska experience, this is one you can’t miss!

Your Alaska hunting trip begins in Fairbanks with a one-hour air charter flight directly to our base camp in the heart of the beautiful Alaska Range. Upon arrival, you will be met by our camp staff to get you settled in and prepare for your hunt the next day. By Alaska law, you cannot fly and hunt the same day.
Our Base Camp is a traditional style wall tent camp, complete with cots and wood stoves. You can expect excellent meals in mess tent and our guests even enjoy a nice shower in a heated room to clean up when needed. If you’re hunting out of a spike camp, you won’t be living as comfortably as you would at Base Camp – but you’re in it for the adventure and the ultimate Alaska experience.
After arriving in camp, you will check your rifle with the help of our guides to make sure you are confident and ready to take that shot of a lifetime. We will help gauge your competence and can provide a few pointers if needed before taking to the field. Whether you shoot long range or short range, we can accommodate your skill, give you valuable advice if needed, and coach you through the shot. Finally, we will help you prepare your gear for the hunt, whether you will be hunting out of our comfortable base camp or spiking out for the duration of your hunt.
At Lazy J Bar O Outfitters, we understand what it takes to the job done and to give you the opportunity to take the trophy of a lifetime. We expect you to give us the same effort, and we will do everything we can to give you the best hunt possible and help you create memories to last a lifetime.
