Heritage Safaris operates in the Selous Game Reserve in blocks U4, LR1, LR2 & MS1 consisting of 480,000 hectares (over 1.1M acres) of pristine African wilderness specifically set aside for world-class dangerous game and plains game hunting without equal. In the true tradition of wild Africa, we specialize in dangerous game hunting (Buffalo, Crocodile, Elephant, Hippo, Leopard & Lion) as well as plains game hunting of species not typically found in other regions (Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Roosevelt Sable, Nyasa Wildebeest, etc).
The Selous Game Reserve is one of the oldest and largest reserves in all of Africa; 4 times the size of the famed Serengeti, and larger than Switzerland. The Selous contains globally significant populations of Buffalo, Elephant, Lion, Leopards and many other species. Hunting in Tanzania is often referred to as “The Holy Grail of hunting” by big game hunters all over the world due to the staggering numbers of animals, outstanding trophy quality and an authentic Eastern African experience as experienced by the great hunters of yesteryear.
Tanzania and especially the Selous Game Reserve has an undisputed reputation for producing exceptional dangerous game trophies, and is well represented in the SCI Record Books. The hunting prospects for dangerous game are fantastic. The country is especially highly regarded for Buffalo hunting. The Selous is also very well renowned for the immense population of Crocodile, Hippo, Leopard & Lion, which are abundant in our blocks. Additionally, there is a diverse range of plains game such as Eland, Kudu, Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Nyasa Wildebeest, Roosevelt Sable, etc.
When on safari in the Selous you will be immersed in the largest and oldest wilderness in all of Africa. This is the Selous Game Reserve located in Southern Tanzania, remaining essentially as it was hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago.
Hunting season in Tanzania is open from 1st of July to 30 November. Methods of hunting are spot-and-stalk, tracking, hunting from blinds, etc.

Our camp is accessed from Dar es Salaam via private air charter or vehicle, which we arrange on behalf of our clients. The camp is located directly on the banks of the mighty Rufiji River. Hippo and crocodile bask on the sandbars of the Rufiji River mere meters from the banks of our camp where there is spectacular Tiger fishing when one wants a period of relaxation.
Our camp is erected anew at the beginning of each safari season and consists of a thatched roof, open air dining rondavel where daily meals are served at a spacious table with comfortable seating. A generously stocked kitchen with refrigerator and freezer are adjacent to the dining area. Three fully and freshly prepared sumptuous meals along with evening appetizers around the boma fire are served daily.
Successful hunts result in the preparation of delicious game dishes. Under the same thatched roof is a comfortable seating area with sofas, chairs and tables for relaxing after meals. Outside a pleasant fire pit is located where clients can enjoy the traditional “sun downer” while gazing at the stunning sunsets across the Rufiji River.
Our floored sleeping tents are spacious, airy, and equipped with electricity (solar power and generator), enclosed shower, lavatory (sink with running water & flush toilets); hot water is on demand. Clients sleep in real beds with full service linen. Daily laundry service is included. We are also equipped with Satellite phones and limited Wi-Fi.
In short, our camp operation is structured to provide all the basic comforts of home in a wilderness setting without having to endure the discomfort of a rugged environment.
