Kansas Bird Hunting Outfitters

Rio Grande Turkey, Ring-Necked Pheasant, Bobwhite Quail, Partridge, Prairie Chicken, Grouse, Eastern Turkey and Dove.

Ringneck Ranch is located on land that our family homesteaded in 1872, a time when the Cheyenne and herds of buffalo still roamed central Kansas.  The ranch sits isolated in a pristine prairie valley looking out on the Blue Hills range.

Keith and Debra have personally owned and have professionally operated Ringneck Ranch on the families 5th generation homestead since its inception in 1983. The operation includes over 10,000 acres of the finest native pheasant, bobwhite quail and prairie chicken habitat imaginable.  Coverts, ranging from easily traversed thin strips of weeds to sprawling fields of chest-high CRP grasses, are managed with both the hunted and the hunter in mind.

Hearty country gourmet is the table fare that our guests remember. The best compliment that we receive is that our services are “seamless” – from the hunting, to the meals, comfortable guest facilities, bird dogs and accommodating staff.

Pheasant Hunts in Kansas over dogs

Traditional field hunts have been our specialty at Ringneck Ranch for over 30 years. With our cover development and over 10,000 hunting acres of prime upland game bird habitats, we are able to provide an opening day experience every day. Pheasant season at Ringneck Ranch runs from October 1 through the first week of March. Each hunting party is allocated one of our staff that acts as a guide and dog handler along with a 4 door four-wheel drive truck for the duration of your stay at Ringneck Ranch.

The hunting headquarters are in the middle of the Houghton Ranch, homesteaded in 1872. The Carr Creek, overlooked by the Blue Hills Range, is a wonderful setting for upland gamebird hunting. Traditional hunts in grain fields bordered by native grasslands offer our guests the same experience that several generations of our family have always enjoyed. Small hunting parties are led by our gunless guides/dog handlers, equipped with a four-door, four-wheel-drive one ton truck.

Kansas Upland Wing-Shooting Lodges for Quail, Pheasant and Prairie Chicken

We understand that it takes more than quality gunning to satisfy today’s wingshooting enthusiast.  Hunting parties are kept small for safety’s sake, and all are lead afield by one of the Ranch’s gunless professional guides.  The guides pride themselves on their seasoned dogs from a variety of pointing breeds.

Our superb wingshooting, peaceful lodging and bountiful country gourmet meals, all woven together with exemplary service, are reasons that most guests have established the tradition of an annual trip to the ranch, often returning with the next generation.

Q Chukar Hunting Packages

We have traditionally only hunted upland gamebird species that are native to North Central Kansas. Over the past few years we have perfected hunting Chukar in our native grasslands. In our Chukar fields you will get to experience hard-flying birds in open grasslands looking toward the Blue Hills. Chukar are about half the size of pheasants and extremely good fliers. You will get to witness some outstanding dog work as they quarter the open areas and lock up hard on these quick birds. Call and talk to Avery or Tyson in the office for more details. You won’t want to miss out on this high action hunt.

A single limit of (12) Chukar is $180/ hunter and can be added onto your pheasant hunt package. Partial limits are available.

Example Chukar hunt package: A group of 4 hunters can hunt a full limit (12) per hunter for a total 48 birds liberated, or choose to hunt a half limit (6) birds per hunter at 24 birds liberated, or a quarter limit (3) per hunter at 12 birds liberated.

Our Chukar hunts are done in the grasslands below the hills and consist of a private hunt in the morning or late afternoon before or after the completion of a pheasant hunt.

If you are interested in hunting Chukar give us a call ahead of time as we can not add them at the last minute.

Q Bobwhite Quail Hunting Packages

Ringneck Ranch has seen great quail numbers for the last 3 seasons. Kansas as a whole has been the top quail hunting destination during those years and in some parts of the state has seen the best populations in 30 years. Bobwhite quail hunts during the traditional fall season running from November 10th through January 31st. A very limited number of native quail hunts are available year to year dependent upon current populations. The outlook for the 2018-2019 season is unclear, we had great number going into the winter and spring but the weather has prevented us from being able at this time to get a good evaluation. We are hoping to see a continuing positive trend and we will have a better idea of quail densities after the hatching season. We will discourage quail hunts in years that populations do not warrant. For safety reason we have a two hunter/guide max and 8 bird limit/person. Call the Ranch and talk to Avery for more details as these hunts are only available on select dates.

Q Prairie Chicken / Grouse Hunting Packages

If you book a pheasant hunt, See our special rates for a Prairie Chicken shoot add-on.

The Greater Kansas Prairie Chicken is a unique grouse species that have successfully been reestablished the last 30 years in their ancestral habitat of the native grasslands of North Central Kansas. Greater prairie chickens are commonly found in the Flint Hills of eastern Kansas and the Smokey Hills of central Kansas.

Prairie chickens often travel several miles from grassy roosting sites to feed. Preferred feeding sites are soybeans and milo, but the birds also eat alfalfa and winter wheat. Normally, chickens fly out to feed for one to several hours at sunrise, returning to their grassy cover. A second feeding period takes place near sundown. The birds typically move in flights from roost to feed at the same time and generally over the same flight path daily. To be successful the flights need to be scouted for proper placement of pass shooters at first light and at afternoon feeding. The flights are deceptively fast and many a gunner has watched the birds pass unscathed after well placed shots “where they were, not where they is!”

Ringneck Ranch offers a unique “guaranteed shot” prairie chicken hunt that is typically most productive starting mid-December through the end of the season on January 31st. If we do our homework, we have been very successful in getting a “shot” for our guest. The “chickens” move high and fast and most have been shot behind. Plan to be in position mid-afternoon for the evening feed. They also move at first light, but you’ll miss breakfast.

Prairie chicken regular season runs the third Saturday in November through January with a bag limit of 2 per day.

“Semi Guided” : Includes lodging, continental breakfast, morning and evening sessions, field transportation, bird cleaning and processing, and supper. The daily bag limit is 2.

1 guest – $475

Q Dove Hunting Packages

Four species of doves are legal to hunt in Kansas: mourning dove, Eurasian collared-dove, ringed turtle-dove, and white-winged dove. Pigeons, also known as rock doves or rock pigeons, are classified as a pest species, not a game species, and can be shot year-round.

Kansas is home to two subspecies of wild turkeys, the Rio Grande and the Eastern. The Rio Grande is a plains dweller and can be found in the western three-fourths of the state. Rio Grande turkeys roost in riparian timber and tree belts, and forage in open grasslands or crop field edges. Said to be the easier of the two subspecies to hunt, Rio Grandes tend to use open areas that make their keen eyesight a major obstacle for hunters. The eastern turkey prefers timbered areas in the eastern fourth of Kansas. It has a reputation as the more difficult subspecies to hunt due to wariness and the thick cover it prefers.
