Colorado Upland Bird Hunting Ranch and Wingshooting Outfitters

Quail, Pheasant and Chukar Hunts in Eastern Colorado

You can practically smell the oil and the gun just thinking about it, and then feel the crisp morning air and the excitement in it as the dogs are ready and anxious to go. Warm-ups at the five-stand, the pheasant walk, or the flurry shoot are done with a desire to get out in the field with your dog. Or you can come out the afternoon of your arrival for shooting sports and take your time working up an appetite for dinner. Better still, you can participate in shooting sports any time of year to make sure you’re ready when fall comes and Wing Shooting season begins. Or just for fun! Every instructor at the ranch is NSCA Level 1 certified.

Cast & Blast trips are anglers’ and hunters’ favorites – participating in two of their favorite sports in one day. Fin & Feather Expedition trips take those one step further when you explore the diversity around the main ranch and get inspired by some of our big beautiful neighborhood. Shooting Sports are great fun in their own right at any time of year, but they get a lot of heated action in the fall when bird hunting is in season.

Colorado Private Hunting Ranch

Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule Deer, Black Bear, Mountain Lion Cougar and Merriman’s Turkey

Western luxury lodging in private cabins & shared house suites offer space, privacy & choices. WIFI is available at headquarters, the main pavilion, and in most of the houses and cabins if you really want to stay connected while getting away to the western wilderness.  All the accommodations have fully stocked kitchens and large outdoor kennels are available for wing shooters who like to hunt over their own dogs.

The sprawling ranch sleeps only 38 within its 400+ square miles, giving an intimate, yet spacious feel to the experience. There is plenty of room and opportunity to feel like you own the place and get truly personalized service. Houses and cabins are spread out to optimize privacy. You’ll feel the close attention of our professional associates and skilled guides as they cater to your every wish. Guests can choose their favored type of accommodations based on availability and seasonality.

Castle Rock Camp in our nearby Kimball Creek Valley offers glamorous camping – glamping – in safari-style tents. King beds (or two twins), dressers, chairs and western elegance make for an elegantly comfortable stay. Thermostatically controlled heaters take the chill off the night air. The sounds of Kimball Creek will lull you to sleep and will be the first thing you hear in the morning. Fire pits make good gathering spots to watch starry skies. Private, locked marble baths are close by for each of the 8 tents. The 1200-square-foot log Pavilion with a roaring stone fireplace nearby provides a great space for festive group meals, happy hours, gatherings and more.

Our private cabins, each with its own personality and features, are scattered around the ranch, some renovations of original homestead farmhouses. Two larger houses are great for groups or extended families or friends and are closer to the headquarters. Accommodations have kitchens stocked with snacks on the counters, coffeemakers, and drinks in the refrigerator. There are also big TVs, entertainment and games, and private baths.

Fly-fishing Lodge and Outfitters in Western Colorado

Fish for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout, Cutthroat and Cut-bow.

Fishing is good eight months out of the year, and every season has its own charm and benefits. Early spring fishing brings the annual epic feeding frenzy after what seems like an eternity of winter. As soon as the water temps begin to warm the fish come alive and the party begins. Anglers warm up too and finally pack up the gear they’ve been admiring at home just waiting for these first days out. The guides are experienced and can help you make good choices, pick out the biggest cruisers, use your greatest stealthy moves, and have net always ready. It will be up to you and your guide how to fish each different cascading pool, what approach to take, which pattern to use. All this happens on a ruggedly scenic landscape that’s one of the prettiest places you’ll ever find to plant yourself for a few days. When you’re not scanning for a big rainbow, you can look up and out and remember why it’s often said that trout only live in the most beautiful places on earth.
Q Cast and Blast

Fishing for Trout in Colorado

Nothing stimulates a healthy trout like spring temperatures. Spring does the same for men’s souls. This is the most exciting time of year at The High Lonesome Ranch. The western slope of the Colorado Rockies is coming alive. The wild grasses are greening, the wildflowers are blooming, hatches are coming off, and trout are rising. The epic feeding frenzy on the Main Ranch begins in April.

Summer means warmer air and water temperatures and it’s the perfect time to book a Fly Fishing Expedition and explore some of our big beautiful neighborhood on one or more of the great western rivers where you can do some wading or drift boat fishing. Or bring your families and teach kids to fly-fish on the Main Ranch where footing is solid and wading isn’t required.

The K-T Ranch trout fishing comes to life right around the 4th of July. Mid to late summer is prime time in Meeker. Late August and early September are idyllic. As the fields are beginning to dry and prep begins for cutting, the big grasshoppers are abundant and so are the trout that relish their annual arrival. The White River practically boils with trout when farmers mow their hay on the neighboring fields and the hoppers go wild.

Fall brings Cast & Blast Expedition trips, both of which are wing shooters’ and anglers’ favorites – engaging in two of their favorite sports on the same day. Colors and moods become vibrant as the air temps cool. These activities continue through later months based on weather conditions.

The High Lonesome Ranch is an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Lodge, and all instructors are certified Orvis fly casting instructors and trout fishing guides.
