The vision of the Dakota Prairie Lodge & Resort began long ago after experiencing the thrill of opening day of pheasant hunting for many years, first as a family tradition and later as a more extended endeavor that included guiding groups of hunters. The orange vests and hats, the sturdy pants for walking through corn stalks and sorghum, the empty shotgun shells, the contest for the longest tail feathers, and the tall tales of amazing shots and unbelievable hits all contribute to the magical aura of pheasant season.
Bringing your best friend to share in your pheasant hunt only enhances the experience. So, of course, we welcome your four-legged companion. Even if your dog is fresh from training, they will learn lots from our guides’ seasoned dogs. They might even surprise you and bring back a bird you thought they’d never find!
Per the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks regulations, the possession limit is three times the daily limit for each species.
Please note that waterfowl licenses are obtained by lottery, and we will assist you throughout this process.
As with all our hunting and fishing packages, 50% deposit is required to hold your dates, and your deposit is non-refundable but valid for three years.
Prairie potholes are depressional wetlands (primarily freshwater marshes) found most often in the Upper Midwest. They are the core of what was once the largest expanse of grassland in the world, the Great Plains of North America. Its name comes from a geological phenomenon that left its mark beginning 10,000 years ago. When the glaciers from the last ice age receded, they left behind millions of shallow depressions that are now wetlands, known as prairie potholes. The potholes are rich in plant and aquatic life, and support significant populations of breeding waterfowl.
Sometimes called the “duck factory” of the Midwest, the prairie pothole region supports more than 50 percent of our nation’s migratory waterfowl. Most prairie potholes themselves are less than an acre in size, little more than depressions in the landscape that fill up with snowmelt and rainfall. Some of these depressional wetlands are present all year long, while others form only after rainfall.
South Dakota is one of the most important duck production areas in North America. Although it is considered a Central Flyway state, South Dakota produces ducks that migrate continent-wide. The portion of South Dakota west of the Missouri River is considered “unglaciated,” so the relatively few wetlands in this area consist mostly of impoundments used to water livestock. The glaciated, eastern part of the state contains some of the highest wetland densities and breeding duck populations in North America. Kimball, where the Lodge is located, is in the Low Plains Middle region and the 00Z Waterfowl Unit.
Prairie dog hunting in South Dakota is so much fun! With no seasonal restrictions and no daily limits, you can shoot until your gun overheats, switch weapons and keep right on going, all day long! Dakota Prairie Lodge & Resort partners with local farmers who are thrilled to have help thinning out the prairie dog population as these varmints ruin their fields with hundreds of holes and a network of underground tunnels. So bring your friends to share in the excitement. We will provide lodging, all your food and beverages, field transportation, and all the amenities of our new, luxury lodge.
Imagine being out on the wide open prairie under a brilliant blue sky with the bright sunshine lighting up everything in sight, the green grass softly waving in the wind and the soft whisper of a busy bumblebee sucking nectar from a nearby purple pasque flower, the solitude broken occasionally by a loud chirp from a red-breasted robin searching for bugs and worms to feed their babies. Now peer through your scope a couple hundred yards away and spy small brown heads popping up repeatedly, making the light brown dirt of the softly sloping hill seem to be continuously in motion. Squeeze the trigger gently and one little varmint bobs up and then drops back down his hole, even while the rest of the nuisance village seems completely unbothered. Repeat 500 times.
