Started in 1966 with the purchase of the lodge & property located at the base of scenic Steel Mountain in Western Newfoundland – Canada. This is an area well known to Big Game Hunters and Atlantic Salmon Fishermen. Ben Alexander expanded Fly-In Hunting Excursions to Benabbey Lodge and was one of the first Members & President of the Newfoundland Labrador Outfitters Association (NLOA). He worked tirelessly with the association as an Outfitter for over 50 years, consulted with various interest groups, government, and local hunters to promote sustainability and enhance tourism potential for all of Newfoundland.

BenAbbey – Newfoundland Fly-In Remote Hunting Lodge

Exclusive fly-in hunting operation with our lodge located in Southwestern Newfoundland.

Benabbey Lodge is an exclusive Fly-In Hunting Lodge located on a beautiful 3 lake system surrounded by hills and valleys in the middle of fantastic moose & caribou country.  As you can see the lodge is on a long sandy beach.  Perfectly remote area free from locals & other hunters at the headwaters of Fishell’s River. A hunters’ paradise, the area is also fantastic for a non-hunting guests to go hiking, boating, kayaking, photography, or trout fishing.

Benabbey Lodge is positioned on a beautifully long sandy beach at the headwaters of Fishells River. Guests are flown into camp by Commercial Charter (Floatplane or Helicopter)

PROFESSIONAL COOKING

Our guests rave about the food.  A full-time cook prepares wonderful home cooked meals, along with snacks and desserts.  See more photos below in the Gallery.

COMFORTABLE LIVING SPACE

Lodge is comfortable with 4-5 hunters per week. Guests enjoy the modern design, self-contained camp which is well insulated.  Hunters have their bedroom area separate from staff.

WHAT EACH DAY CAN BRING

Complete with generated electric lights, running hot/cold water, wood stove heating, propane cooking stove, interior washroom facility including hot shower.

EVENING ACTIVITY – CAMP FIRE

Experience more than just a hunt, it’s the trip of a lifetime.  Guests may find opportunity for trout fishing, evening campfires, BBQ of fresh game, and an evening of guitar music at the campfire.

Moose Hunt

EASTERN CANADIAN MOOSE has an average antler size measuring 42 inches….stands 7 to 10 feet tall.  Bulls will weigh 850 to 1200 lbs and females around 600 to 850 lbs [1kg = 2.2lbs].  Moose numbers in Newfoundland have flourished since it was originally introduced here in 1878.

Woodland Caribou Hunt

WOODLAND CARIBOU – with a 100% success rate & several records to boast Steel Mountain Lodge territory and guides are a winning combination.  Benabbey Lake has exclusive fly-in hunting for caribou along a natural migratory range.

Double Moose Hunt

In Newfoundland, a minimum of a 24 caliber rifle is required to hunt moose. It is important to shoot for the vital areas of a moose since they are huge animals. Each day from lodge our experienced Guide will take the Hunter to known Moose areas.

Black Bear Hunt

Hunting Moose or Caribou in the fall has its excitement but black bears are also around….so if you wish to add a Black Bear tag in combination to your Moose or other hunt then we can issue the Bear Licence for $1,000 US.

NON-HUNTING GUESTS

Steel Mountain Staff greet each guest/hunter once in Newfoundland.  You will be taken to the helicopter or bush plane to experience a ‘bush flight’ into our exclusive hunting lodge where you will be Guided on a hunt knowing there is a Full-time professional cook at lodge waiting for you each day.

 

NEWFOUNDLAND HUNTING SEASON

WEEK 1

SEPTEMBER

ARCHERY HUNTING – (Bow Hunting Only)

Government permits Bow Hunting Only during this period (no rifle).

Hunting big game with a long bow, curved bow or compound bow the regulations require that the bow have at least 20 kilograms pull (44 lbs) at full draw.  Arrows must be tipped with metal hunting heads with two or more sharpened cutting edges.

Rifles: Must be .24 calibre or greater, semi-automatics are permitted [no automatics] ensure ammunition is compatible with a bullet weight over 100 grains and muzzle energy of over 1500 foot pounds.
