Blue Mountain Peak Ranch has some of the most beautiful hunting sites in Texas Hill Country. Hunters find themselves in a land of rolling hills, steep ravines, springs, running water, fields, and forests that were present in this part of the country 150 years ago. There are four blinds on the 832-acre ranch with feeders that go off at dawn and dusk. Competent hunters can hunt away from the blinds by setting up their own stands. If you wish to participate, you need to be at the ranch for an orientation 3 daylight hours before hunting.
At Blue Mountain Peak Ranch in Mason, TX, each of our hunting blinds has two chairs, a propane heater, scent-masking supplies, and four two-way radios that are provided free of charge to make hunting activities more enjoyable. There is well water available to drink and for dressing deer with a place to dispose of animal waste. We allow camping and self-contained RVs at no charge to clients. To help you stay connected, there is free Wi-Fi internet access and an AT&T cell tower on our ranch.
Blue Mountain Peak Ranch is an MLD (Managed Land for Deer) ranch, so our deer-hunting season goes from October 1st through the end of February. Deer hunters use our MLD tags instead of their hunting license tags. Here, a Texas hunting license is required. We welcome archery, crossbow, black powder, and rifle hunters. We hunt does over 3 years of age, spikes, and three-pointers which may be taken upon paying the regular fee. A few mature and post-mature trophy bucks are available each year. In addition to the regular daily hunting fees, $2,500 must be paid in advance to shoot the buck of your choice (it must be mature/post mature, 5-1/2 years) with your buck fee FULLY REFUNDED if you don’t see and shoot a trophy buck.
The deer population increased in health and makes for excellent hunting. The deer population is also kept in balance with their food supply. Moreover, the ranch has a policy to hunt and trap feral hogs as they are very destructive to the ecosystem. We trap and dispatch Cow Birds as well, so our songbird population is thriving.
Aoudad and Axis have been seen on the ranch, but they and any other exotics may only be harvested upon paying standard hunting fees.
Turkeys may be taken during the regular season per Texas Parks Wildlife laws and regulation, upon paying standard hunting fees.
Feral Hogs can be hunted all year for the same hunting fees and max/min guns as deer, with a REFUND of $10/hog/hunter for up to five hogs.
Blue Mountain Peak Ranch is located in the Hill Country and is Mason, TX’s highest point of land at 2,135 feet. The ranch is run by owner, Richard Taylor and his Partner Suzie Paris. Sprawling 832 acres, the ranch was purchased in 2001 and placed into wildlife management. As The Conservation Agency Co-Founder and Vice President, Richard follows their philosophy. The ranch is a great site for nature tour, hiking, and more; Blue Mountain Peak Ranch has won eco-restoration awards and is featured in several YouTube videos.
The work to improve the ranch began in 2002. We did this by cutting Ashe Juniper mostly by hand as well as implementing prescribed burns, which removed the brush and germinated the native seed inventories, restoring the land to what it was like in the mid-1800s. We are continually educated and helped by Keith Blair of My Red Buffalo, a certified burn specialist, together with the helpful field biologists from Texas Parks & Wildlife. We have conducted “prescribed burns” on more than 800 acres, and the results in flora and fauna improvement were remarkable. Springs, small creeks, and waterfalls are showing up in many places.
As a result, the improvement in viewing wildlife was dramatic. Ashe Juniper, also called Cedar by the locals, was native but mostly confined by fire to deep ravines. However, it has exploded across the landscape of Hill Country over time. Texas’ dramatically changing ecosystem puts stress on the native species, stops the absorption of the normal 26” annual rainfall, and causes the runoff of this rainfall from going into the aquifer. Our elimination of Ashe Juniper and prescription burning resulted in the rebirth of nature as it was, with year-round live water in many places where there was none.
