Cost and Trophy Fees for an Eland Hunt in Africa and Texas
The average price to hunt a Eland Bull on a game ranch is between $4,000 and $6,500, which is considered moderately affordable for an exotic big game animal – especially one with such a unique coat and spirial horns. The final total depends on the size of the rack, trophy fee, rifle or bow hunt, number of days, taxidermy fees, quality of accommodations, amenities and services available.

Hunting Trophy Giant Eland Bull in Texas
When walking, the Elands tendons make a clicking sound. Some people can hear this from a mile away, so its important to listen for while hunting. Giant eland are alert and wary, too, making them difficult to approach and hunt. The Elands spiraled horns are incredible to see; though they spiral tightly many times and can be as long as four feet, they tend to stay very straight, moving in a V shape away from the males head. Females also have these awesome horns, though they do tend to be a bit smaller. Theyre usually light tan in color, very similar to the Elands coat.
They can move quite fast, running over 42 mph and, despite their size, are exceptional jumpers, easily jumping 10 feet from a standing start, and clearing heights of over 5 feet. This combination poses a challenge to even the most experience hunters and accurate shots.
Physical Characteristics
The Eland is a very large animal, running between 7.3 and 9.6 feet in length and standing about 5 to 5.8 feet tall at the shoulder. The Eland also has a 3 foot tail, and the animal weighs in between 975 and 2,200 pounds. This makes it a great trophy hunt, but also an unbeatable meat hunt.
The Eland has a fairly light tan coat, running from chestnut to reddish brown, and it is broken up similarly to the Bongos coat, with vertical white stripes. These stripes are thin and unevenly spaced. The shoulders and back often share a dark black crest. The nose tends to be a bit darker, and there are white markings on the face and lower legs. Running down the throat and chest is a wide mane of skin and longer hair that is lighter in color than the dark hair of the neck.
Native Habitats and Countries
The Eland sticks to central and western Africa, looking for glades, grassland and the savanah. It eats grasses, leaves and even the branches of trees, so its preferred habitat is one with plenty of vegetation. It also drinks often, so it needs a solid water source close at hand, even during migration.
Behavior/Social Characteristics
The Eland is a nocturnal animal, seeking cover during the day. It also migrates throughout the year, and it moves in tight herds that stay together constantly, suggesting a strong social bond. The males are fairly passive, even when theyre breeding, despite their huge size. Herds can be quite large, with as many as 60 animals to a group. However, an average of about 20 is more often seen.
