Hunting Trophy Sika Buck
Sika buck have antlers with tines, four on each side, though occasional instances of sides with five or six tines have been noted. The brow tine begins near the burr, while an inner top tine extends from the beams inside and creates a terminal fork that faces forward. The males antlers are between 16 and 36 inches long. The sika deer is most active between dusk and dawn, though it is sometimes;but far more rarely;seen during the day. This makes hunting challenging. Females do not have antlers, but they have distinctive black bumps that rise from the forehead.
Physical Characteristics
The Sika deer is typically medium-sized, though some subspecies can be rather small. They are compact deer and their heads are distinctive due to their wedged shape. The deer stands from 31 inches to 43 inches when measuring to the shoulder, the deer weighs between 105 pounds and 250 pounds, and the animal is between 37 and 71 inches in body length. The tail runs around 3 to 5 inches long.
A Sika deers coat ranges widely between reddish brow, mahogany and black. Rarely, an all-white Sika will be spotted. No matter the color, the animal has a black dorsal stripe that starts right by the skulls base and runs back to the tail. There is a bright white patch on the rump. In the summer, the coat is more of a reddish-brown, and white spots dot the surface; in the winter, the spots fade and the deers coat darkens. While other species lose these spots when they age, the Sika does not.
Origin, Native Habitat and Countries
The sika has a large native area running from southern Siberia and the island of Hokkaido;part of the Japanese chain;and extending down to Formosa and southeastern China. It has also been found in northern Vietnam. The sika deer looks for areas with open grasslands and light forests, as it eats both leaves and grass. The sika first came to Texas in 1939, when it was distributed across 77 different counties. There are now more than 11,000 animals in Texas.
Behavior/Social Characteristics
When in packs, the sika deer have 10 different sounds that they use to communicate, and theyre quite vocal. They use everything from a loud scream to a soft whistle. Males become more territorial in the summer, and theyll defend these territories, often fighting with other males. These fights involve both antlers and hoofs. A male will also gather as many as a dozen females to create a harem during the mating season. Herds are never much larger than this, and many animals are solitary.
