Hunting Trophy Wild Yak

Male yaks have impressive horns that can reach 38 inches long, while females have shorter horns that are typically about 20 inches long. These smooth, white/gray horns are thick at the base, growing out from each temple and moving sideways before curving upward. They end pointing straight up with sharp points.

A yak is massive, standing between 6.5 and 7 feet tall when measured at the shoulder. A typical yak runs between 8.2 feet to 11 feet long, and it has a tail between 24 and 39 inches long. It weighs between 675 and 2,200 pounds, so the largest trophies provide an abundance of meat.

Physical Characteristics

The yak is extremely stocky and bulky, with a hunched back, broad shoulders and a head that droops downward. The yaks hair is long, shaggy and dark; its so long at the bottom that it looks like a skirt down near the legs. This hair is dense and used to preserve of body heat. While most wild yaks are dark brown or black, many on Texas exotic hunting ranches have lighter patches of cream and reddish brown. There are no distinct markings on the face or underside that are consistent to all animals.

Origin, Native Habitat and Countries

The yak originally came from the Himalayan mountain range and the surrounding region. It is found in Central Asia, Mongolia and Tibet. In fact, 90 percent of the population still lives in the Tibetan Plateau. Though most yaks still live in the Himalayan mountains, there are around 2,000 of them in North America, with most of those in Texas.

Yaks live very well in cold and cool climates, like alpine meadows, mountains and steppes. Due to their long, dense fur, they can live in a habitat where the temperatures drop to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. They will even live in places with frozen water sources, as they can swim in this ice-cold water without a drop in body temperature.

Ecology/Behavior/Social Characteristics

A yaks herd runs between 10 and 100 animals. There are a handful of males, but the vast majority of the herd is female. Males and females mate in September, and one baby is born nine months later. Females only have young every other year.
